The Green Way to Furnish Your Home

It’s no secret that people the world over are beginning to put a lot of focus on living in a more “green” manner. Between recycling efforts, switching to more eco-friendly fuel sources and other, similar practices, green living has secured a solid spot in the mindsets of not only Americans, but people all throughout the rest of the world as well. The fact is, however, living green is about more than just switching to environmentally-friendly cleaning products and changing out a few light-bulbs. One of the most important things you can do when striving to embrace this lifestyle is to consider adding green furnishings to your home. The following are just a few things to think about regarding green furniture, all of which can help to steer you in the right direction.

Where to Buy

The best way to outfit your home with eco-friendly furniture is to have a solid idea as to where you should be shopping. Green furniture can be difficult to find, and can’t usually be found at large department stores or similar venues. Rather, you’ll do best by shopping at locally-owned furniture stores that specialize in high-end pieces. Even if they don’t tend to carry green furniture, there’s a good chance they can order the piece that you’re looking for without issue.

What to Look For

When shopping for green furniture, there are a variety of things that you’ll want to look for. First, you should ensure that the person who you are buying from is knowledgeable enough about the product to tell you where it was produced and what materials it is made out of. Look for furniture that is made out of sustainable hardwoods or other materials that do not deplete the environment. As with all furniture, that which you consider should always be well-built and sturdy, as it doesn’t matter how eco-friendly a piece of furniture is if it is likely to fall apart on you.

Quality

A popular misconception is that green furniture is not as good quality. This is completely wrong. The care taken into sourcing sustainable materials and making sure all production processes have the smallest of carbon footprints are paramount to creating green furniture, but also the manufacturers take pride in what they are producing, to do the cause justice. You can still have eco-friendly luxury bedroom furniture or amazing French dressers, without compromising on quality.

What To Expect to Pay

One thing that a lot of people don’t realize is that shopping for sustainable furniture can actually be a rather expensive process. After all, green furniture is more popular now than ever before, which has influenced the market and has driven prices up rather high. Expect to pay at least 30% more for a piece of furniture if it is green or environmentally-friendly. While you’ll pay a premium, you can rest easy that you’re purchasing a product that won’t hurt the environment.

Belly Dance Goddess, Animal Champion

It’s time to introduce you to a real live “Green Goddess”.

My friend Faye has several incarnations.   In one existence, she’s certainly a goddess – a gorgeous belly dancer in a beautiful sequinned and bejeweled belly dance costumes

In another existence, she’s a caring counsellor in training.  And in yet another, she’s a passionate animal welfare spokesperson and fund-raiser.    She’s even written a book which is widely used in schools to teach children about caring for animals.

Even children need educating when it comes to animal care!

But I guess this just illustrates that we can all be many things in our lives!  Just because we are busy with our careers or our families, doesn’t mean we can’t do something to speak up for the rights of those less fortunate – whether they be people or animals.

Even if it’s only a small thing, every little really does help.  Just think how many millions of people there are in the world – even if we all gave just one cent, how much money could be raised for a good cause!

And of course, there are plenty of things we can do, even if we can’t afford to donate money.   Being aware of animals in our own environment, and reporting cruelty, for one thing.   Even caring for the environment is, indirectly, caring for animals – even small actions like recycling or switching off lights can help save our wildlife.

I was reminded of that fact recently when visited the new tiger cubs at Taronga zoo, and heard how their habitat is threatened by the production of palm oil.

The Benefits of a Green Backyard

By now you probably already know a few people in your circle who are going green. It’s a term that might be misleading for some because it covers such a broad spectrum of elements. Some people equate it to going with a vegetarian diet while others think it involves protesting for greater causes. But it doesn’t have to be all that complicated and the changes you make in your life don’t have to be entirely dramatic. Sometimes even doing smaller things can benefit the environment and future generations at the same time. One area of your home that can benefit from more green elements is definitely your backyard. And best of all, it can be incredibly easy to implement some simple backyard practices that end up saving you money as well.

The first thing you need to determine is if there are any extra areas of your backyard that are wasting energy. Remember that energy comes in many forms and we are just talking about electricity. For example, larger backyards with a huge amount of grass space take-up incredible amounts of water each summer. In order to maintain that clean look, you’re actually using up more resources than under normal circumstances. So one thing you can do is take a look at whether or not you actually need all that grass in your back lawn, and possibly explore cutting it down. It might seem ironic that going green involves eliminating vegetation, but this can save on water consumption every year.

There are also other practices that can be implemented in any common backyard such as a garden or compost bin. These are two elements that work well with each other while providing you a chance for a new hobby as well. Gardening doesn’t get as much attention as it should, and some people avoid it because it seems too difficult. But you don’t have to be an expert in order to grow a few vegetables or explore new flowerbeds in your own backyard. A compost heap is similarly easy to implement and there are lots of opportunities to create something that you can use on a daily basis. Using this way to eliminate organic waste can benefit the environment tremendously.

Other energy-saving measures include taking a look at how your backyard is lit and making sure that you don’t have access lighting. A lot of people are also moving towards gas barbecue that use more energy-saving measures as well. For example, a natural gas barbecue can still perform just as well as a propane counterpart, and you get the same type of taste as if you used charcoal. Of course the major difference is you use a much more efficient energy source with a natural gas grill that will prove to be cost-effective in the long run. As you can see, there are many things you can implement right now and none of them have to be all that complicated. And when everything is said and done you’ll have a backyard that you can feel proud of.

Save Money Through Water Conservation

These days, a lot of people are struggling financially. It’s not hard to see why though with how the economy is. If you want to know how to make extra money from home without having to join some Kirby vacuum scam, then look into reducing your current expenses. You could do things like making sure you turn off the lights when you leave the room. Better yet, replace your lights with energy saving lights. Instead of washing a bunch of small loads of laundry, do bigger ones.

Another way to save some money is through watching your water use. Although at the moment, water seems to be quite plentiful, there is a world wide water shortage in terms of drinking water. But let’s just talk about the water you use at home. Many people like to take really long, hot showers especially during the winter. You could save money by shortening your shower time. You could even make a game out of it and see how quickly you could shower thoroughly. When water your lawn, use what’s necessary and don’t over water. Instead of buying bottled water, buy a water filter and drink tap water instead. Some may think it’s not as safe but tap water has way more regulations than bottled water so it’s actually safer. Doing these things will not only help save money but it will be good for the Earth as well.

Real estate investing and environmental hazards

If you are a beginner investing in real estate and new to the responsibilities of real estate ownership, you should know that there are associated environmental programs. Under some circumstances, both state and federal laws can hold past and present owners liable for damages. When you consider investing in property, these problems can reduce the value of property besides imposing financial burdens on the owner. The seller of the property has a duty to keep you fully informed and you should insist on full disclosure before concluding any deals.

Old buildings in particular could use materials that are health hazards and these materials include lead, asbestosis and formaldehyde. In the past, asbestos was extensively used for insulation because of its superior insulating qualities. It is also widely present in flooring and roofing. It has subsequently been discovered that inhaling asbestos can lead to lung disease as well as some forms of cancer. Asbestos in building material is not dangerous by itself but aging can cause it to splinter. The tiny particles that are released into the atmosphere as a result can be inhaled. You should check for asbestos related problems in any building that pre-dates 1978.

Lead was extensively used in paints and pigments as well as the pipes used for plumbing. Before 1978, paints and pigments that contained lead were freely used for both the exterior and interior of the property and especially on surfaces made of wood such as windows and doors. It is highly toxic and has the unfortunate effect of accumulating in your system over time. Lead poisoning can lead to general weakness and sometimes paralysis of different parts of your body. In the case of children, it may also be responsible for brain damage if it is ingested. High levels of lead in places such as landfills can result in the contamination of underground water.

Speak Out Against Animal Cruelty in The Cosmetics Industry

The cosmetic and beauty industries are huge. They are multibillion dollar businesses that continue to come up with new ideas and products to sell us with each passing year.

With the aging population products such as wrinkle cream, anti aging moisturizers and treatments are all the rage and flying off the shelves faster then you can say boo.

However are you aware what some of these companies do to animals to test the safety and effectiveness of their products? It’s down right sad that these companies are allowed to get away with what they do.

Rabbits are often a common victim of cosmetic companies who test for eye and skin irritation on these small helpless animals. They’re tested to the point where they cannot handle any more and then destroyed only to be replaced by another one who goes through the same horrible experiences.

What Can You do To Help?

While there are lots of activist groups such as PETA that you can get involved in and also make donations to help educate the public and bring laws into reality that will stop this cruelty there is something you can start doing today.

Speak out with your spending and vote for the companies you know aren’t testing on animals with your dollars you spend each and every day. Avoid the large brands that are testing on animals and opt for more ethical products. There are detailed lists of companies that do and don’t test on animals available online.

Spread the word to friends and let them know that you’re making this choice and I’m sure some of your friends will be on board with you. Be the change you want to see in the world!

Reading Comprehension: The Factors

There are two basic factors that effect reading comprehension: reader and text.  Within these two basic factors are quite a few subfactors.  The reader is, of course, the person reading the material.  The text is, obviously, the material that is written and being read.

The subfactors for the reader are:

foreknowledge- what you might already know about the subject before reading

vocabulary- being familiar with the written words and knowing their meanings, along with being able to apply the meanings

fluency- recognizing words quickly, which allows quick reading and the smooth flow of words

comprehension strategies- the ability to troubleshoot comprehension problems while reading

comprehension skills-  automatically noting key factors in a story, including sequencing and cause-and-effect

motivation- how badly the student wants to read and understand the material

Subfactors for the text are:

genres- unique characteristics of a story or book – the type of book

text structures- the way the text is organized

text features- glossary, index, table of contents, etc.

Each of the above listed subfactors contribute to the level of reading comprehension.  The reader needs to have the ability to understand what he is reading.  Reading way beyond an individual’s level of understanding is not beneficial to the reader.  Readers should gradually read more difficult texts, after reaching an acceptable level of comprehension of the prior level of difficulty.  Understanding the factors that affect reading comprehension can help you choose the appropriate course for your own reading comprehension goals, as well as that of your child’s.

Apes as Pets

It goes without saying to most sensible people that having any kind of ape, monkey or primate as a pet is a very bad idea. However there are still loads of people who are stupid enough to go out and buy a monkey as a pet, even though they make terrible pets, and 99% of people cannot possibly offer them the surroundings and mental stimulation they need. An adult chimpanzee can easily kill a fully grown man, so imagine what it could do to your children or your other pets. Most monkeys bought as pets end up cruelly treated and neglected. more often than not they end up mentally disturbed by the conditions they frequently end up being kept in, and from the way way they are treated. It is rare for the pet owner to keep the primate pet until it dies of old age, and most end up in rescue centres or confiscated by authorities. I read an article today called Why Monkeys Do Not Make Good Pets and I believe anyone who is leaning towards the idea of buying a monkey as a pet should read the article themselves and change their mind in favour of a more ideal pet to suit their abilities and time. Wild animals do not make good pets, and this is a lesson many have learned already, quite often the hard way. If you really want a pet then you should read a good article on Choosing the Ideal Pet, and make a more educated choice.
