Save Money Through Water Conservation

These days, a lot of people are struggling financially. It’s not hard to see why though with how the economy is. If you want to know how to make extra money from home without having to join some Kirby vacuum scam, then look into reducing your current expenses. You could do things like making sure you turn off the lights when you leave the room. Better yet, replace your lights with energy saving lights. Instead of washing a bunch of small loads of laundry, do bigger ones.

Another way to save some money is through watching your water use. Although at the moment, water seems to be quite plentiful, there is a world wide water shortage in terms of drinking water. But let’s just talk about the water you use at home. Many people like to take really long, hot showers especially during the winter. You could save money by shortening your shower time. You could even make a game out of it and see how quickly you could shower thoroughly. When water your lawn, use what’s necessary and don’t over water. Instead of buying bottled water, buy a water filter and drink tap water instead. Some may think it’s not as safe but tap water has way more regulations than bottled water so it’s actually safer. Doing these things will not only help save money but it will be good for the Earth as well.

Real estate investing and environmental hazards

If you are a beginner investing in real estate and new to the responsibilities of real estate ownership, you should know that there are associated environmental programs. Under some circumstances, both state and federal laws can hold past and present owners liable for damages. When you consider investing in property, these problems can reduce the value of property besides imposing financial burdens on the owner. The seller of the property has a duty to keep you fully informed and you should insist on full disclosure before concluding any deals.

Old buildings in particular could use materials that are health hazards and these materials include lead, asbestosis and formaldehyde. In the past, asbestos was extensively used for insulation because of its superior insulating qualities. It is also widely present in flooring and roofing. It has subsequently been discovered that inhaling asbestos can lead to lung disease as well as some forms of cancer. Asbestos in building material is not dangerous by itself but aging can cause it to splinter. The tiny particles that are released into the atmosphere as a result can be inhaled. You should check for asbestos related problems in any building that pre-dates 1978.

Lead was extensively used in paints and pigments as well as the pipes used for plumbing. Before 1978, paints and pigments that contained lead were freely used for both the exterior and interior of the property and especially on surfaces made of wood such as windows and doors. It is highly toxic and has the unfortunate effect of accumulating in your system over time. Lead poisoning can lead to general weakness and sometimes paralysis of different parts of your body. In the case of children, it may also be responsible for brain damage if it is ingested. High levels of lead in places such as landfills can result in the contamination of underground water.

Speak Out Against Animal Cruelty in The Cosmetics Industry

The cosmetic and beauty industries are huge. They are multibillion dollar businesses that continue to come up with new ideas and products to sell us with each passing year.

With the aging population products such as wrinkle cream, anti aging moisturizers and treatments are all the rage and flying off the shelves faster then you can say boo.

However are you aware what some of these companies do to animals to test the safety and effectiveness of their products? It’s down right sad that these companies are allowed to get away with what they do.

Rabbits are often a common victim of cosmetic companies who test for eye and skin irritation on these small helpless animals. They’re tested to the point where they cannot handle any more and then destroyed only to be replaced by another one who goes through the same horrible experiences.

What Can You do To Help?

While there are lots of activist groups such as PETA that you can get involved in and also make donations to help educate the public and bring laws into reality that will stop this cruelty there is something you can start doing today.

Speak out with your spending and vote for the companies you know aren’t testing on animals with your dollars you spend each and every day. Avoid the large brands that are testing on animals and opt for more ethical products. There are detailed lists of companies that do and don’t test on animals available online.

Spread the word to friends and let them know that you’re making this choice and I’m sure some of your friends will be on board with you. Be the change you want to see in the world!

If you are looking to help reduce your carbon footprint and help the environment Adding more plants to your garden is always a fantastic idea.  What many people do not realise is that you need to plant the right types of plants to get the most out of your garden!

Choosing the right kind of plants for your environmental needs is always dependant on the size of your garden.  For instance conifers fantastic for absorbing carbon, but unless you want to manage a hedgerow, they need a lot of space!

The green style is a great way to improve your health, your concience and your lifestyle, but it does take a little extra work, be prepared to do a little gardening, and spend some time researching  how to get the most out of the space you have!

Don’t just stop at your garden, look for other environmental techniques, such as solar outdoor lights to help reduce your electricity drain and help the environment!

Reading Comprehension: The Factors

There are two basic factors that effect reading comprehension: reader and text.  Within these two basic factors are quite a few subfactors.  The reader is, of course, the person reading the material.  The text is, obviously, the material that is written and being read.

The subfactors for the reader are:

foreknowledge- what you might already know about the subject before reading

vocabulary- being familiar with the written words and knowing their meanings, along with being able to apply the meanings

fluency- recognizing words quickly, which allows quick reading and the smooth flow of words

comprehension strategies- the ability to troubleshoot comprehension problems while reading

comprehension skills-  automatically noting key factors in a story, including sequencing and cause-and-effect

motivation- how badly the student wants to read and understand the material

Subfactors for the text are:

genres- unique characteristics of a story or book – the type of book

text structures- the way the text is organized

text features- glossary, index, table of contents, etc.

Each of the above listed subfactors contribute to the level of reading comprehension.  The reader needs to have the ability to understand what he is reading.  Reading way beyond an individual’s level of understanding is not beneficial to the reader.  Readers should gradually read more difficult texts, after reaching an acceptable level of comprehension of the prior level of difficulty.  Understanding the factors that affect reading comprehension can help you choose the appropriate course for your own reading comprehension goals, as well as that of your child’s.

Apes as Pets

It goes without saying to most sensible people that having any kind of ape, monkey or primate as a pet is a very bad idea. However there are still loads of people who are stupid enough to go out and buy a monkey as a pet, even though they make terrible pets, and 99% of people cannot possibly offer them the surroundings and mental stimulation they need. An adult chimpanzee can easily kill a fully grown man, so imagine what it could do to your children or your other pets. Most monkeys bought as pets end up cruelly treated and neglected. more often than not they end up mentally disturbed by the conditions they frequently end up being kept in, and from the way way they are treated. It is rare for the pet owner to keep the primate pet until it dies of old age, and most end up in rescue centres or confiscated by authorities. I read an article today called Why Monkeys Do Not Make Good Pets and I believe anyone who is leaning towards the idea of buying a monkey as a pet should read the article themselves and change their mind in favour of a more ideal pet to suit their abilities and time. Wild animals do not make good pets, and this is a lesson many have learned already, quite often the hard way. If you really want a pet then you should read a good article on Choosing the Ideal Pet, and make a more educated choice.

Mediterranean Sharks Need Protection

The Mediterranean Sea has long been the breeding ground for many of the world’s sharks. The warm and deep waters of the Med bring some shark species back year after year in nursing shoals that traverse the Atlantic Ocean to safely deliver their pups.

Many shark pups do not survive to adulthood, left, as they are, to fend for themselves from birth. In many shark species, it takes a long 14 years before they reach an age and size for reproduction.

Unfortunately, shark fins are a prized delicacy in the Asian markets and many Mediterranean fishermen have turned to shark finning as a way to make a living. This has resulted in a huge loss to the shark population, especially so since satellite imagery is being used to hunt down the nursing shoals and wipe out all those mother sharks before they have given birth.

International agreements have been drawn up to protect the sharks, but those measures are not being enforced.

The Mediterranean’s shark population has collapsed, and it is possible they will be wiped out altogether within the next 20 years if stiff measures are not agreed upon and rigorously enforced.

The 46 known species of shark currently living in the Mediterranean will be lost of future generations forever.

Those same fishermen who are currently fishing the shark to extinction may well find that whatever takes over as top of the oceanic food change after the shark has gone may find their traditional industry gone for good.

Any ecological upset of this magnitude invariably has severe knock-one effects.

Protect Mediterranean sharks now. Push aside your fears about Jaws or any other Hollywood movie that demonizes sharks. The sea is their territory and not ours. They do not come on to land to kill us.

Saltwater Fishing Tips and Fishing Guides

Let’s say you’re going to the Sunshine State for some Florida fishing. You’ll need a lot of saltwater fishing tips to ensure that you have a fun and successful fishing trip. Right? Well, this is usually true, unless you hire a professional fishing guide, and in that case, he’ll provide you with all the tips you’ll need!

Why to hire a fishing guide

Saltwater fishing can get pretty confusing, and it can even be dangerous. Part of this is because there are so many different angling opportunities, even within the same basic location. For example, you might want to fish nearshore, or you might prefer to do some deep sea fishing far from shore. If you’re not familiar with handling a boat or you’re unfamiliar with the area’s environment, like reefs and sandbanks, you could wind up in the drink. Also, the ocean is a huge place, and finding the fish you want to catch is tough when you’re not local.

Even if you want to do some inshore angling, hiring a local fishing guide is a great idea. Inshore angling includes fishing in bays, canals, estuaries, and saltwater creeks, and these are often difficult to navigate. An experiences guide probably knows all these locations well because he might ply the waters several times a week. Take advantage of his knowledge and experience!

Clown Statues and Figurines

Don’t be shy about adding clown statues and figurines to your home accents. They definitely add a touch of interest to your home accesories. I use them much like I use garden gnomes. I love to tuck clown statues among my summer flowers. It surprises people and makes them laugh. All the better if the clown statue has a big flower pin – that in real life would probably squirt water at you or another clown! I always tell people the clowns are out hunting for more joke corsages.

You can also tuck them in the woodpile beside your fireplace. I always say things like he’s escaped from the circus. Of couse I forget all of these clown statues (and quite frankly other figurines and statues as well), when small children come to visit, we have to keep a close eye on them. Not so much for the statues and figurines, but we don’t want any small child getting cut on broken pieces – or God forbid putting them in their mouths.

Sometimes I have to organize search parties and give a prize to the guest who finds the most figurines. It is a fun scavenger hunt! Maybe someday I’ll get organized and keep a list of where I put things. But truly I doubt that day will ever come.

Are Child Pageants Abusive?

I’ve heard more than a few anti-pageant folks accusing pageant moms of child abuse. Are child pageants and toddler pageants abusing young children? I really don’t think so, but I would never say that with 100% certainty because there are always extreme circumstances with anything. I do not, however, believe that the pageants themselves are abusive, in general.

The parent or parents who enter their child in pageants are the ones who are responsible for the experiences. Toddler pageants can be a lot of fun for little girls and little boys, but it’s up to the parents to make this happen. Some parents involved with child pageants can be cutthroat competitors and will do anything to ensure a big win for their child. What do these pageant parents think they’re teaching their kids? These parents take it out on their own kids when they don’t win or if they don’t perform perfectly on stage. Sometimes it’s obvious to everyone that the child hates competing in pageants, and it’s certainly understandable how they came to feel this way. Parents like the ones mentioned aren’t into pageantry for their children – they’re doing it for themselves. In my opinion, this is when there’s a problem with child pageants and toddler pageants!
